Lavere E. died instantly in an auto crash, on 20 August 1968 on
Kansas Turnpike, near Cassoday, Kansas.

OBITUARY:
"Former Resident Victim On Pike
Lawrence, Kansas, Wednesday, August 21 1968.

   A former Lawrence resident dies Tuesday afternoon in a one-car
accident near Cassody on the Kansas Turnpike.
   Killed instantl when his 1968 model station wagon left the
roadway and slammed into a bridge pillar was LaVere Eugene Surber, 44
of Wichita.  He was born Jan. 15, 1924. in Richland and lived in this
area until 1951, when he moved to Shawnee, Okla.
   After five years there, he moved to Oklahoma City, Olka., and just
recently he moved to Wichita.  He was a corporate pilot and formerly
was employed in Lwrence as a pilot and crop-duster.
   Turnpike troopers said the station wagon was northbound when it
left the roadway.  Officials said Surber apparently fell asleep at the
wheel.  He was alone in the vehicle.
   He is surbived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. LaVergne Surber of
Richland: to children, Lee Earl and Lorie Surber of Long Beach, Calif.;
and a brother Vernon E. Surber of Wichita.
   Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Tibbetts Mortuary in
Topeka and burial will be in the Clinton Cemetery."
