571. William Woodward BRANDON

Dictionary Of Alabama Biography: Page 207

  "BRANDON, WILLIAM WOODWARD, lawyer and probate judge, was born
5 June, 1868, at Talladega: son of Rev. Frank T. J. and Carrie (Woodward)
Brandon (q. v.).  Gen. Brandon was educated at the Ceder Bluff institute,
and the Tuscaloosa high school.  At the age of thirteen he went to work
for himself:  In 1891 took the law course at the University of Alabama:
in 1892 located in Tuscaloosa for the practice:  in 1891 he was elected
clerk of the city of Tuscaloosa, and in the same year was appointed a
justice of the peace.  In 1896-97 he was a representative in the
legislature, and he was re-elected, the session of 1898-99.  In the
house he had leading commitie assignments and took a prominent part in
legislative affairs.  In millitary affairs his service has been
conspicuous.  He was liutenant and captain of the Warrior Guards, and
in 1900-01 major in the Thrid Alabama volunteer infantry regiment,
Spanish-American War; was apointed adjutant-general of Alabama, 1899,
and re-appointed in 1901, serving until 1906.  As adjutant-general he
successfully reorganized the old Alabama national guard.  In 1906 he
was nominates for Stat auditor in the Democratic primary, and in the
general election was overwhelmingly elected, serving 1907-11.  In 1911
he was elected probate judge of Tuscaloosa County, a position he still
holds.  In 1892 he published a miltary journal at Tuscaloosa entitled
"The Citzen Soldier."  He was a reading clerk of the constitutional
convention, 1901.  He is a Democrat; a Methodist; an Elk and a member
of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon college fraternity.  Married: to Mrs.
Elizabeth (Andrews) Nabors, daughter of the late Dr. Allen S. Andrews
(q. v.). Residence: Tuscaloosa."

 "WILLIAM WOODWARD BRANDON, of Tuscalosa, was born June 5, 1868, at
Talladega, and is the son of Rev. F. T. J. Brandon, a Methodist
minister, and wife,  Carrie Woodward.  Mr. Brandon was educated at
the the Cedar Bluff institute and the high school at Tuscaloosa.  He
went to work fo him self at the age of thirteen years, and in 1891-92
took the law course in the University of Alabama.  In 1892 he began
the pratice of the law at Tuscaloosa.  In 1891 he was elected city
cler of Tuscaloosa and was appointed justice of the peace.  In 1896
he was elected representative in the genral assembly and re-elected
for the two succeeding terms.  He has been a member of the State
Democratic committe.  He has been lieutenant and captian of the
Warrior Guards in the State troops, and was a major in the Second
Alabama regiment in the Spanish-American war.  In 1899 he was
commissioned adjutant-general of the Alabama National guard, and
reappointed in 1901.  He is a Democrat and a Methodist.  He is
one of the most eloquent and brilliant campaign speakers in the
State and has done much work for the party on the stump.  His wife
was Mrs. Elizabeth (Andrews) Nabors, daughter of the late Dr. Allen
S. Andrews.  In 1892 Cornel Brandon published a military journal at
Tuscaloosa entitled "The Citizen Soldier.  He was reading clerk of
the Consitutional convention of 1901, of the lower house of the
legislature of 1903 and of the national Democratic convention
which held its meetin in St. Louis in July, 1904, and nominated
Judge Anton B. Parker as Demcratic canidate for president of the
United States.  His paternal grandparents were Francis L. Brandon
and wife, Miss Haynie.  His mother was a sister of Gen. William
H. Forney.  Cornel Brandon has successfully reorganized the
National guard of Alabama.  He is wise in council and eloquent
in debate.  His clear voice and martial bearing make him the ideal
military leader, and his courteous manners and genuine worth win
for him for him the hearts of his friends."
