"Ruck" Woodward, Former Sheriff and a Kansan since his Second Year, Dies.

                       THE FUNERAL AT CLINTON
James Rucker Woodward, lovingly known to his many friends as "Ruck" passed away last night after a sickness of about sixteen weeks duration. His Body will be at Rumsey's Funeral Home where it may be seen by his friends, until it is taken to Clinton where the funeral will be held at 2o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Presbyterian church. The officiating ministers will be Rev. J. J. Skinner and Rev. J. A. Hall.
Mr Woodward was born August 20, 1854, at Bloomington, Ill. and came to Kansas two years later with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. David T. Woodward. The father was a circuit rider in the Methodist church and did a great deal of pioneer work. The family located at Clinton which was their home for many years and where some of the children still reside.
At an early age Mr. Woodward became a member of the Methodist church and was always an active and efficient worker. He was essentially an honest man, who loved his neighbors and did much kindly work in helping those who were sick.
Taking an active interest in Republican politics, Mr. Woodward held everyevery office that could be given him in Marion township and in 1904 he was elected county sheriff and served for two terms. In 1916 he was again elected sheriff and served two terms and since 1920 has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. George B. Jenson. Mrs. Woodward having died in 1913.
As sheriff, Mr. Woodward was conscientious in enforcing the law and did such good work that he gained the hearty approval of the law abiding element of the community.
Ruck Woodward was one of the first men in his neighborhood to realize the need of more education for his children than could be afforded in the district school.
March 19, 1876 he was married to Miss Martha Ellen Baum of to this union eight children were born, four of whom survive: Martin W. Woodward, of Spokane, Wash., Lloyde E. Woodward, of Pueblo, Colo., George J. "Rook" Woodward, of St Joseph, and Mrs. George B. Jenson, of Lawrence.  The children who passed away were Albert E., Roy T., Lillian and Anna.

DEATH CLAIMS ANOTHER
Mrs. J. R. Woodward Died This Morning After Lingering Illness
Came to Douglas County in 1857 and Was a Continual Resident of This County

Death this morning claimed Mrs. J. R. Woodward, wife of J. R. Woodward of this city.  Mrs Woodward had been ill for sometime and recently was taken to the Simmons Hospital where she died this morning.  Death was caused by cancer of the stomach.
Mrs Woodward was born in Holt County, MO., May 26, 1855, she came with her parents Mr. and Mrs Martin Baum to Kansas, settling in Douglas County and until the time of her death was a continual resident of this count.  On March 19, 1876 she was married to J. R. Woodward of this county.  She was the mother of eight children, seven of which are living and were here at the time of her death.  They are M. W. Woodward of Spokane, Washington; Lloyd E. Woodward of Pueblo, Colorado; Thomas R. Woodward, Mrs. Henry Simmons, Mrs Anna Bell Woodward.  Mrs George Jenson and George Woodward all of Lawrence.
The funeral will be held on Thursday morning, internment will be in the Clinton Cemetery.  Rev. J. J. Snyder will have charge of the service which will be held at the home, 1208 Deleware street.
Fifty-six years a resident of Douglas County, a lifetime in itself.  Mrs. Woodward was a force for good all these years.  Many of them were hard years, there were always more lean than fat ones, as there was in the lives of our pioneers.  But the hard life made this woman strong just as it brought out the greatest strength of the pioneer characters generally.  Mrs. Woodward came to Douglas county with her parents as a child two years old.  All her (unreadable) life was spent in this county. She was a good girl, a good woman, a fine wife and a mother of unsurpassed worth in her home life and influence that radiated in every direction.
Mrs. Woodward was young when she died, but she had lived a long time if measured by the times a pioneer passed through  She was a stalwart and brave and fought her battles along with her good husband as they came, never hesitating, never turning back.  She was a sister of the Lord and she never hesitated to do her duty.  It is sad to have such lives end, but good to know that they did their work here and the rest is not unwelcome.
