BIOGRAPHY OF OSCAR J. WOODWARD

Born: Clinton, DeWitt County, Illinois, April 29, 1849
Died: Peralta Hospital, Oakland, California, December 23, 1935

Son of Jesse and Isabell (McPherson) Woodward.  Married Anna Ludolph in Kenny, DeWitt County, Illinois, on October 12, 1875. Anna Ludolph was born on the Atlantic Ocean on June 24, 1853.  She died in Fresno, California, on April 28, 1919.

Mr. Woodward's father was a prosperous dry-goods merchant but suffered serious financial reverses shortly before his death, which made it necessary for his son to work part-time to help support his mother and sister.  In consequence, he did not graduate from high school until the age of 20.  After graduation, he taught one term in a country school.  He next started work as a clerk in a boot and shoe store in Clinton, Illinois, and three years later became Jacob Vogel's partner in the shoe store.  The partnership dissolved after six years, and in 1880, Mr. Woodward visited California to study conditions there.  He returned to Clinton, and again engaged in a shoe business for three years, after which time he again formed a partnership with Mr Vogel.  He left Mr. Vogel in charge of the business and went to Prescott, Arizona, where he stock-ranched for eighteen months, and then sold out at a substantial profit.  From Arizona he went to Los Angeles, California, and in 1885, located in Fresno.  (This was the year Fresno was incorporated as a city.)

He established himself in the real estate business, and made investments in Fresno properties.  One of his first developments was the subdivision Woodward's Addition, bounded by Hamilton South I (now Broadway), California Avenue and Pearl Street.

In 1887, he was chose Cashier of the First National Bank of Fresno (no to be confused with a later institution known as the First National Bank in Fresno, which went defunct), and in 1888, he became the banks's president, which position he held for thirty years until the bank was merged into Bank of Italy, now Bank of America.  At that time, he was appointed Vice-President and Chairman of the local Advisory Board of the Bank of Italy.  He was a stockholder and a director of the Bank of Selma for many years.  He was also a stockholder and Treasure of the Fresno, Belmont and Yosemite Railroad, which was a horse-car street car line serving Fresno. For many years until the time of his death, he was a Director of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company.  At one time, Mr. Woodward served a term on the School Board in Fresno, California.  He belonged to the Democratic Party.

Mr. and Mrs. Woodward were the parents of the late Roy J. Woodward, Oscar Nelson Woodward, who died in infancy, Ralph W. Woodward, and Abbie Woodward Parker.
